Summertime: Explore, Find Fun, Restore Your Spirit
Sharon Rekieta, Fitness Director - 20th July 2012
Research continues to demonstrate that pleasurable pursuits lead to numerous benefits including improved mood, increased productivity and longevity. With that in mind and many days of summer still ahead, take advantage of the perfect season to have some fun while recharging your spirit and enhancing your health.
One of the easiest ways to freshen your perspective is to "discover" your own town.
Consider the following options:
Pretend your best friend from another state is coming to visit. What attractions would you put on the list as "must-sees"? Grab a buddy or two and spend a day or a weekend touring notable landmarks.
Is there a hotel or bed and breakfast in your town that receives raves from locals and visitors? Book a reservation, pack a bag and enjoy a couple of nights. Not having to deal with airport security measures or the details of planning a road trip means more time for you to kick back and relax.
If you'd prefer not being in the midst of crowds or a lot of out-of-towners, find something off the beaten path - literally. Visit a secluded park on the other side of town; hike an unfamiliar trail; take an outdoor nature class such as bird watching or plant identification or discover "geocaching" the real world outdoor treasure hunt.
And remember there is a lot to be said for the "make-no-plans vacation". In our over-scheduled and commitment-driven lifestyle, sometimes simply letting your mood guide your day can be a wonderful way to recharge your spirit. Just remember the main objective - have fun!
