ABS Away in Three Steps

One of the most common questions we are asked is: “How can I reduce my belly/stomach/spare tire?”

There’s really no mystery to acquiring a firm, flat abdomen; just follow these three steps.

Burn off calories with cardio sessions.
Any type of aerobic exercise that increases your heart rate (walking, running, biking, swimming, dance classes, etc.) will help eliminate the layer of fat in the abdomen area that might be hiding your muscles.  If you’re not already working out regularly, gradually build up to 45- to 60-minutes of sustained activity five to six days a week.

Tone the abdomen area muscles.
Perform toning and tightening exercises several days a week that specifically target the “core”.  There are many options including: Pilates classes that focus on the powerhouse, yoga sessions that include strength positions, and basic calisthenics such as crunches and waist twists.

Eat a healthy, low-fat diet.
Calculate the number of calories you need every day to maintain your desired weight—and stick to consuming that number on most days!  In addition, remember it is also the “quality” of the food we eat and not just the “quantity”.  Even recreational athletes should focus on eating nutritious foods such as whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, vegetables and healthy fats.

Can you still acquire great ABS by following only one or two of the above steps?  Yes, however, progress will be slow.  The best plan for speedy results is to focus on all three aspects: burn calories, tone the underlying muscles and feed your body appropriately.  You’ll be sporting a most marvelous midsection in no time!
