Let the Beat Move Your Feet

Sharon Rekieta, Fitness Director - 4th April 2014

“Music provides the motivation to power the movement.”
-Sharon Rekieta, PhD an instructor who has let “the beat” move her feet for decades.

Research shows how music impacts our performance: when we hear music, our body wants to move and we want to synchronize our movement to the beat.  In addition, listening to tunes gives us something to think about (or sing along with) and we subsequently forget about fatigue or discomfort.

Other research showed that when recreational and professional athletes listened to music while working out, their physical endurance was increased by as much as 15% compared to those who were not listening to music.

In addition, the pace of walkers who were listening to music was directly affected by the tempo of the songs.  So if you would like to pick up your pace, add some upbeat tunes to your playlist—or alternate moderate tempos with faster for an interval workout.

If music is already a part of your workouts, you’re probably happy, and not that surprised to read that scientific proof exists for what you already know.  If you’ve been wondering if music could improve your performance, or perhaps get you moving in the first place, then compile a playlist of your favorite tunes to play during your next workout and see what happens.  The results could be magical!

Below is a current playlist that I use for teaching a cycle class or running distance.  The tempo varies to allow recovery.  Take a listen and download what you like to create your own personal playlist!
